Local Election Guide

About this guide

This guide shows the positions taken by local government candidates in the 2026 election on legal action to recover local climate costs from fossil fuel companies. We believe this is one of the most important things local governments can do to protect our communities and hold those who profit from causing climate change accountable. We encourage you to consider it when you vote. You may also want to weigh a broader range of issues, so each candidate card links to the original surveys.

Unless otherwise noted, the information comes from Vote4Tomorrow surveys, many of which asked candidates whether they would “Pursue available legal options to recover a fair share of the climate costs facing our community from fossil fuel companies and other big polluters.”

In the Capital Regional District, it also draws on the Livable CRD survey, which asked: “Climate-related damage and adaptation costs increasingly fall on municipal budgets. Would you vote to have your municipality join other BC local governments in legal action to recover a share of those costs from major fossil fuel producers?”

The guide lists candidates in the communities we are tracking, including those who have not yet answered Vote4Tomorrow or Livable CRD. We encourage you to contact them directly. Candidates who wish to record a position can write to info@suebigoil.ca and we will add it.
